Marcel L’Herbier was a film-maker whose work traversed a whole array of creative fields including art, design, architecture, interiors and music. To reflect this, the symposium brings together experts in those fields, inviting them to respond to the director’s work and to situate it in the wider context of inter-war Parisian modernism. Opening with a keynote lecture from Mireille Beaulieu, a film scholar and L’Herbier expert, the speakers will go on to re-evaluate the filmmaker’s work in relation to other art forms. The symposium will investigate L’Herbier’s contribution to modernist cultural production, spanning not only problems of aesthetics, design, architecture and the avant-garde but also the shifting gender formations of the 1920s and 30s against the backdrop of the worlds of style and fashion.
The symposium is organised by Caroline Evans.
