From wordsmith to blogger, from magazine editor to social media user and live broadcaster, the role of the journalist is in a state of flux. Whether creating content for printed and online publications, digital sharing platforms (Vine, Instagram, YouTube) or filing copy live, fashion journalists are now expected to operate across multiple platforms, whereby a degree of familiarity with filmmaking is fast becoming part of the job description. This panel will explore the changed role of the fashion journalist in a multi-media industry and consider how filmed content is impacting on, and colliding with, other forms of fashion journalism. It will ask what new digital formats have recently emerged and what old formats have become newly prominent, and how they have altered in new contexts.
Chair:
Agnès Rocamora is Reader in Social and Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion. She is the author of Fashioning the City: Paris, Fashion and the Media and has written for journals including Fashion Theory, Sociology and Sociologies et Societés. She is a contributor to Fashion’s World Cities and Fashion as Photograph and a co-editor of Fashion Media: Past and Present and International Journal of Fashion Studies among others.
Panellists:
Caryn Franklin is former Co-editor of i-D Magazine as well as a fashion broadcaster for the BBC (The Clothes Show), ITV and Channel 4. She has worked with refugees in battle zones, women in sweat shops, mental health experts and government ministers. Co-chair of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and co-founder of All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, she received an MBE in 2013. Her books include Franklin on Fashion (1996) and Fashion UK (2002).
Sally Bolton is Junior Fashion Editor at The Sunday Times Style Magazine, working closely with Fashion Director Lucy Ewing. Previously she assisted various stylists including Jane How, Jamie Surman and Zoe James, working on editorials for self service, i-D, SHOWstudio, Chinese and Japanese Vogue. She is also a PhD student at Central Saint Martins, studying the contemporary fashion image.
Lou Stoppard is a fashion writer and broadcaster and since 2011 she has been Editor of SHOWstudio. She has written for ELLE, GQ Style, The Times, Dazed and Confused, & i-D among others. She has interviewed numerous fashion practitioners including Philip Treacy, Nicola Formichetti, Alexandra Shulman and Gareth Pugh. She regularly collaborates with cultural institutions and fashion retail (including the V&A and Selfridges) on talks and panel discussions.
Susie Lau, better known as Susie Bubble, is a writer and editor based in London. Her acclaimed blog Style Bubble, founded in 2006, is a platform for her thoughts, personal experiences and observations on fashion. Lau was editor of Dazed Digital between 2008–2010 and is now a freelance writer for the site. She also contributes to the BBC, Elle and is a contributing editor of POP magazine.
